Iusserat namque DEUS amiculo Sacerdotali, Ephod dicto, medio in pectore illigari pannum pretiossimum, palmi magnitudine, quod Pectorale seu Gap desc: Hebrew dicebatur, cui duodecim uniones stupendô opere inserti erant, XII. Tribuum nomina praeferentes. Qui quaterni gemmarum ordines (quadruplici enim serie erant dispositi) vel ipsa Urim et Thummim erant; quae voces Luces et Perfectiones denotant, conf. Exodi c. 39. v. 8. 10. et Levit. c. 8. v. 8. vel certe fuêre secretius ac sanctius aliquid, a Deo artifice Mosi traditum et mystico isti panno inscriptum, Scripturis vero tacitum adeoque ignotum. Modus Oraculum consulendi hic: Pontifex, extra Adytum, facie ad Arcam obversâ, stabat, et qui petebat responsum, a tergo eius se componebat. Quô habitu ille ad id, quod animô conceperat, certissima responsa accipiebat et consulentibus reddebat. Quae ex novo ac insolito lapillorum fulgore, vel litorarum ex Pectorali prominentium ac ordine protuberantium serie, ab ipso deprehensa, Iudaei autumant: Quod tamen incertum est; cum in longis variisque adeo Oraculis locum id habere non potuerit, vide Iudic. c. 1. v. 1. 2. 2. Unde cum Urim et Thum. mim certus Prophetiae gradus in Pontifice fuerit verosimilius est, vel externâ voce ex Adyto, vel saltem per internum instinctum, in mente Pontificis, respondisse, Consultum autem illud Oraculum maxime sub Tabernaculo legimus; sub Templo autem, cum Deus per Prophetas crebrius responderet, paulatim desiisse: sicut et sub secundo Templo una cum aliis rebus sacris illud prorsus desideratum est; quod frustra Iudaei sub Messia restituendum putant, male intellectô locô Esrae c. 2. v. 63. et Nehemiae, c.7. v. 65. Usus ac causae Oraculi hae erant: Ut Deus sese populo suo praesentem testarentur, atque illum a Gentium superstitione torque Oraculorum ac sortium ludibriis abstraheret; inprimis, ut CHRISTI imagini figurandae atque adornandae hi Pectoralis lapides et hae luces ac perfectiones inservirent. Ille enim solus Sacerdos iste est, qui in pectoris sui Adyto luces ac perfectiones insculptas habet, quique Dei ac hominum Interpres unicus, certissima mortalibus responsa reddit. Ut non aliô oraculô amplius opus sit, ne quidem in Ecclesia; cum lucis huius fulgor et radii universum Dei Templum collustraverint, omnemque eius doctrinam perfectissime absolverint: ut alias sortes movere, mendacemve Spiritum vel in specu aliquo mugientem, vel in templo, aut ex Capitolio proloquentem, audire nefas sit.
